I’ve always admired people who think of better ways to do things. Innovation requires a problem solving, can-do mindset, and competition is an excellent way to bring about this creativity.

The Punkin Chunkin annual contest is an excellent example. Propelling this orange vegetable as far as possible encourages team work and forces those that engage to draw upon all their ingenuity to win. This friendly adversity brings out the best in us.

Promoting creativity doesn’t always have to be as extreme as the space race. Oregon Manifest promotes two-wheeled innovation in bicycle design and construction. Enjoy this video and see what they came up with.

The Yakezie Network of financial and lifestyle bloggers promotes creativity every day. Here’s some of the best articles from last week.

  1. 101 Centavos says:

Great video, Hunter. Thanks for the mention.

  2. The Punkin Chunkin contest is awesome. I’ve never launched a pumpkin, but once, while my wife was out of town, my son and I built a 5 foot trebuchet together.

    • Hunter says:

I watched the Delaware finals last week and was impressed by creativity and determination that each team brought to the competition. Those trebuchet’s are formidable, and could easily take off a finger, hand, or worse if you get too close.

  3. krantcents says:

Thanks for the links, I am in very good company.

  4. Jeffrey Trull says:

Haha that’s an awesome contest! Thanks for the mention!

  5. Thanks for mentioning my post, Hunter. :-) Have a good week.

  6. YFS says:

Thank you for the add! Also, the pumpkin chunkin seems like it is amazing!

    • Hunter says:

It’s a little crazy, and a terrible waste of food. I was trying to point out that competition leads to innovation and creativity.

  7. You would love it here in Portland. :)

  8. Oh, Portland! You make it so easy for me to love you.

  9. Thanks so much for including my post. I really appreciate it.

I too enjoy creativity. I actually think there is a lack of it in this world today and that we should embrace new ideas more. I tend to deal with a lot of innovation in my job which I like because it keeps it interesting.

    • Hunter says:

Creativity is important, and often lacking. Being bombarded with commercial media and non-stop news makes it easy not to have your own opinion, if that’s what you want. Original thinking needs to be practiced, and that is one reason I love producing online content…it forces me to think.

  10. Buck Inspire says:

Amazing bike design contest video! These guys are so passionate. Reminds me of Yakezie bloggers. Question, which would get Hunter more excited? An awesome finance blogger conference or an awesome bike gathering? :)

    • Hunter says:

Great question, fortunately I can combine the two! I know I post bicycle content at every opportunity, happy to plead guilty to tht charge. As long as I think it is relevant in some way to smarter living, innovation, or striving to improve, then I’m ok with posting two-wheeled content. The appeal for me is the simplicity of the bicycle, and this metaphor can easily be applied to our lives. I’m all about living an uncluttered life.

  11. Although Punkin Chunkin takes place about an hour and half from my house, I’ve never been. In fact, I think it’s weird and I’m honestly shocked by people’s sudden fascination with it.

Well, at least it gives Delaware some notoriety beyond Joe Biden :)

  12. Hunter says:

Delaware is the incorporation capital of America! Haha.

Let me clarify, Punkin Chunkin is a little weird and crazy. No arguments there. However, the challenge forces those teams to design creative solutions and innovate and that is what impresses me.

Round-the-world balloonists are also a little crazy, but the challenge forces them to adapt and create new technology. Friendly adversity brings out the best in people.
