I agree that it is encouraging to see the wealthy give away their money for worthy causes. Yet, I can’t help but think that we make their giving more valuable and in turn makes us less likely to give. Instead of setting a precedent, it seems to become a “they can give enough money for all of us” mentality… in some ways at least.
I see what your saying. In the U.S. at least there is a strong social sense that giving is expected and the right thing to do. One drawback of this is that the dwindling group of middle-Americans that give blindly are also struggling to meet retirement goals and possibly drowning in consumer debt. Is it wise to give to others when you have credit card debt? That’s a great topic for discussion.
Both WB and BG are setting a worthy precedent. I hope more billionaires follow suit. The world could do with some wealth sharing!
