Pretty alarming stuff, especially given how much worse it’s gotten in the last 20 years. With all things said, what’s the solution here? I’m stumped.

I think the government can help out a lot. For one they can create more tax credits related to physical activity. They can better regulate trans fat content in foods. Plus they can help better educate people about the problem.

A big part of the problem not mentioned in the infographic is the time spent on computers. That part might be a lot tougher to address.

Something definitely needs to be done though or the problem will just get worse and worse.

    • Yes. Maybe we can convince the Surgeon General of that. Think of the benefits! When smoking became a culprit, there was no more smoking in the workplace. If computer use can become a culprit, we’ll have to demand jobs that reduce the amount of time on a computer! ;)

  3. Wow, we are in trouble. And by we, I mean American society. The nation of personal responsibility has abdicated that title in favor of fast food.

    Crazy to think about!

Most of the reason for obesity is eating too much, but lack of movement is the other culprit. Portion size is part of the reason and our sedentary lifestyle. In every other country, people walk and eat less.

  6. It bothers me that they use these statistics in a slightly spinnish way. For instance, I’ve never met anyone dying of tobacco smoking. Further, I’ve never actually heard of anyone having died from tobacco smoking. I know, I know, it’s the diseases that the tobacco smoking helps cause that do the killing. But, a majority of those people die of Cancer. So, isn’t Cancer really the biggest killer in that infographic? Same with Obesity. Far more likely that the real culprit is Heart Disease. I’m not saying that we shouldn’t be looking at things like Obesity and Tobacco smoking as the contributing factor. Just that it bothers me, and I find it to be slightly misleading.

  7. MoneyCone says:

With Congress ruling Pizza as a vegetable, I don’t see things getting any better.

  8. I love infographics! I find it so disturbing that no state has less than a 20% obesity rate. We’re killing ourselves with quarter pounders.
