With just over three weeks until our moving company packs our household belongings and ships them to our next duty station we’re rapidly approaching the D.I.Y. deadline. With several home improvement projects yet to be completed we’ve shifted into high-gear.

The good news is that we’re making great progress. The most recent room to be cleaned up and prepared for our renters was the downstairs half bath.

This was our fastest full-room project so far. In just eight (8) days we were able to give this bath a fresh look for less than $500. I understand that a professional crew could have easily done this in a day or two, and possibly for less money. However, I was doing it solo with only the help of my exceedingly capable children.

After gutting the room I worked on the ceiling and walls; patching holes and painting. Using leftover travertine, I had just enough pieces to give the floor a much better look. The toilet was replaced with a dual flush model, saving water and money is just a smart thing to do. The vanity / mirror combo was ordered online, and the light fixture is an off-the-rack option from a local hardware store. That’s pretty much it.

I think the results are just ok. The walls are a little too yellow for me, especially with the cherry furniture, but it will do. Please let me know what you think.

The bathroom looks great! Looks like the kids really helped out. Good luck with the upcoming move.

Thanks Little House! The kids are a huge help, and I really enjoy teaching them all I can. Starting to get very stressed about this move. We’re doing everything we can to make it work.

The kids are a huge help. Sometimes I need to show them things rather than let them do…to save re-work. But overall it’s a positive experience for them to be engaged.

  2. Looks great – a whole new room for $500 – can’t beat that. Plus your kids got a great lesson in DIY.

Yes, I’m pleased with the value. Some of the smallest items were the most expensive. The towel ring and toilet paper holder were $25 each! The vanity wasn’t much more expensive than that!

  3. It looks fabulous! Good work!

I think it looks great. Good job to the whole family.

It looks really nice! I could use you in my remodel.

  6. Looks great! I want to redo my half bath but the vanity needs to be 42″ I think and unfortunately that isn’t a standard size so I am afraid it will be a rather expensive project.

I learned that vanities come in about 300 sizes. This one was 6 inches narrower than the old model. I suppose it depends on the look you’re going for. Definitely shop around. Thanks Lance.

  7. Yay! You KNOW I’ve been waiting for this post :) I love what you did, especially the framed mirror. That always adds such a finished touch to any bathroom.
