Employers everywhere have found that keeping their employees motivated is nearly as important as hiring the correct employees in the beginning.  The most diligent person will naturally slow down if they start losing the drive that they had when they first started.  The trick is figuring out the best ways to motivate your staff based on your situation.

Show Appreciation

Almost everybody feels better, which means they will perform better, if they are appreciated.  The great thing is that you can show appreciation in a variety of ways.  Some companies will host holiday parties or team-building events.  The cost can differ greatly for events and packages for corporate entertainment venues, but the general idea is to front the cost for your employees to have a good time with each other.

You could also offer gifts for years-of-service anniversaries or hand out performance awards.  Some companies will host monthly award parties for no other reason than to give all of their employees a chance to earn some solid form of appreciation.  That also hopefully motivates other employees to strive for the same recognition.

Create Competition

If you are in the right niche, competition can be used to motivate an employee to achieve greater results.  For example, call centers usually have daily or weekly competitions with certain objectives in mind.  The employees know in advance what they need to do in order to win, and that usually gets better results than moving sluggishly along all week.  In general, competition is contagious and drives people to achieve more than they would without the push.

Show Them The Money

If all else fails or you are looking for a way to get results immediately, you may want to look into raising salaries or handing out bonuses.  Money is motivating to nearly anyone.  If an employee knows that cold, hard cash is the prize at the end of their tunnel, they will probably try much harder to accomplish whatever task is set before them.  Money isn’t just money – it is a reward that they can use in any way they see fit.  So it’s flexible and useful to anyone.

In general, if you can show your employees appreciation or consistently egg them on with competitions or extra cash, you may end up with a much more motivated staff than you remember hiring.  Motivated employees can change a company’s atmosphere of success.
